In: Bammann K, Lissner L, Pigeot I, Ahrens W, editors. Instruments for health surveys in children and adolescents. Cham: Springer Nature Switzerland; 2019:209-230. Link IDEFICS recommends 11 hours or more sleep for pre-school children and 10 hours for school children (6-10 years). Promotion of sufficient sleep should be part of any health-related recommendations. A small intervention effect was seen on weeknight sleep duration in that the decrease in sleep duration over 2 years was smaller in the intervention (15 min.) as compared with control regions (19 min).

The IDEFICS study was coordinated by Professor Dr Wolfgang Ahrens at the Bremen Institute for Prevention Research and Social Medicine, back then a central research unit of the University of Bremen, Germany, now the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology - BIPS. 23 research groups and small/medium enterprises from eleven countries participated in the W Ahrens, LA Moreno, S Mårild, D Molnár, A Siani, S De Henauw, J Böhmann, K Günther, C Hadjigeorgiou, L Iacoviello, L Lissner, T Veidebaum, H Pohlabeln and I Pigeot on behalf of the IDEFICS consortium: Metabolic syndrome in young children: definitions and results of the IDEFICS study.

METHODS: Standardised BP and anthropometric measures were obtained from children aged 2 to 10.9 years, participating in the 2007-2008 and 2009-2010 IDEFICS surveys. Age- and height-specific systolic and diastolic pressure percentiles were calculated by GAMLSS, separately for boys and girls, in both the entire population (n=16,937) and the non-overweight children only (n=13,547).
